The material I choose to work with is local but it comes from many sources. The materials can be found in old ship warehouse or just the simple row-home an amish barn and small town water tower, or even a river bed, the location and thus the history of these unique location adds a new layer to each application: the "origin story." Whatever its source, each type of material comes with its own history, strength, and character. Even better, because it has already been harvested and formed once before, it is truly a green and sustainable practice. Not only will the story but quality these reclaimed material contain is far superior and will also add a great deal of value and longevity any

Locations:
Structures: Old-growth trees from the late 1700’s to the mid-20th century were milled to build tens of thousands of warehouses and factories churches bans and houses. Some of the greatest artisans of modern time created amazing detailed architectural wonders. Each structure from the little row-houses filled with fancy woodworking with curved corbels and sturdy, solid doors to the stately manors and soaring churches. Before steel came into play, wood post and beam structures sheltered America’s booming industrial growth. Prior to 1910, east of the Mississippi most factories were framed with prime cuts of Heart pine. Hundreds of these proud warehouses and factories surround this city's center and many others and…each filled with the finest materials.
Our urban forest: From these structures our new constructions can be cut from the "urban forest" or harvested. Philadelphia and the sounding area contain huge supplies of reclaimed big wood timbers and lumber. Because it is old growth, this reclaimed wood has the finest grain structure of all North American softwoods. And since reclaimed wood has stood for decades, it is dry and stable.
Damaged or unsafe trees: Many old beautiful large hardwood trees are blown down by storms or struck by lighting or have become to large for safety sake.... Most of this wood is chipped by tree service crews into mulch or dumped in landfills. But a growing demand for the wood contained within these unique types of large hardwoods. Each time a tree can be utilized like a cherry maple walnut or oak tree we are creating awareness to the value each tree contains..... I love a flitch cut boards, where the wood is plain sawn, with each cut made one after the other, like slicing a loaf of bread the long way...
Favorite reclaimed woods: The storied lives of the woods listed here can be are expressed in three primary finish options: clean sanded, as-is, and textured or a combination of all three. Each option is given the proper green protectant which will heighten the vintage wood's unique and fine character.
Soft woods
Reclaimed Cypress: This wood comes primarily from tank stock and, in one strangely beautiful batch, from mushroom growing bins. Characteristics: Naturally waterproof, greenish wood-tones, bold ribbon-like grain. Used to great effect as custom-milled interior paneling and exterior siding.

Redwood: Salvaged from old water tank stock, this is some of the finest wood available on the planet. Characteristics: Waterproof, flawlessly grained, with some bleeding from barrels staves of prior life. Classic wood auburn tones. Gorgeous custom-milled for decks or exterior furnishings. I love this material!!!
Douglas Fir: This old wood has some of the finest grain pattern our grandchildren and we will ever see. Most of this wood has been salvaged from bleacher seats from area schools…Characteristics: Very few nail holes, nail stain or other signs of previous life. Honey-blush tones. Infrequent small to medium sized knots and minimal light surface checking.
Heart Pine: The main supports of a factory are where the best examples are found. Heart pine offers a bolder contrast in wood tone between sapwood and heartwood within each board. Also, there's more variation between flat and vertical grain. Characteristics: Few nail holes or nail stain. Honey and maple syrup wood tones. Dense wood with a very tight grain and heavy.
Hardwoods
Walnut: Heartwood is rich dark brown to purplish in color with lighter tan sapwood. It is usually straight grained and texture is coarse and uniform. Black Walnut is a very sought after lumber that is excellent for any interior application.
White Oak: The sapwood is lighter than the heartwood, which is a light tan to yellow-brown. White oak is usually straight grained, but can be often irregular or cross-grained. White oak has a slightly less coarse texture than red oak and has been widely used throughout history as a cornerstone wood for most any application.
Cherry: Sapwood is creamy-pink and clearly defined from the heartwood which is a pale pinkish-brown, eventually maturing to red-brown. One of the most sought after domestic hardwoods, cherry is known for its remarkably attractive figure and subtle beauty. With its fine, even texture and clean workability, cherry was the cabinet lumber of choice for many years.
